100 Cupboards

I read the book called 100 Cupboards written by N.D. Wilson. It is about a boy anmed Henry who goes to live with his aunt because his parents are abducted. At his aunts and uncly house he sleeps in a room where the plaster is peeling off and bebeath the plaster there is 99 cupboards. The book talks about the adventure of Henry who goes through many adventures with the 100 cupboards with his cousin named Henrietta.

I recommend this book to anyone who really likes adventure, scary and fantasy books.

Summary Chapters 1-5

First of all, Esperanza is a very happy Mexican 12 year old girl. She lives at El Rancho De La Rosas, has servants and great parents. She lives her life happily, until the day before her birthday Esperanza's father does not return from his work with the cattles because he is killed by bandits. Now, all of her Papa's land should go to Esperanza's uncles who are mean and just care about themselves and their money; Tio Luis is one of the Uncles and wants to marry Esperanza's Mama just to have a good reputation but Esperanza's mother says no. The next day Tio Luis burns Esperanza's house down and Mama finally give in to marry Tio Luis as a part of a plan. During that same night Esperanza, her mother and servants named Alfonso, Hortensia and Miguel escape to work in California. They have to leave Abuelita (Esperanza's grandmother) behind because she is sick.

      Summary Chapters 5-10

Esperanza, her mother, Miguel, Hortensia and Alfonso arrived to California they met Miguel's cousin named Isabel, his aunt named Josefina and uncle named Juan. Together they went to the Mexican camp where they will all live and work. Esperanza was very disappointed with the camp because the cabins where they were supposed to live, were very small and many people had to fit into it. The next day she also found out that she could not work with her Mama and Aunt Josefina in the sheds but instead she had to care for the Aunt Josefina's babies with Isabel until she went to school and sweep the platform. Even though these were pretty easy jobs to do they were hard for Esperanza because when she lived at El Rancho De La Rosas all her servants did this type of work for her. She agreed that if Isabel helps her do her jobs every evening she will tell her all he remembers from her life before. Many weeks passed but suddenly a girl named Marta decided that she wanted to strike because there was not enough food, and even less money which workers got. As time passed many people decided to strike and left camp. One day there was a big sand storm and when Mama got back from the sheds she coughed a lot. When the doctor came he said that she has valley fever and should go to the hospital. 

Summary Chapter 10-13

Many people were worried when the strikers were about to strike but then everyone decided to keep quiet. Mama got much better and came back to live with Esperanza. Miguel went for Abuelita and they all lived happily.  "Esperanza Rising" by: Pam Muñoz Ryan

Chapters 12-15

In chapter 13 the ceremony to bring the Chac Chacs (Mayan gods of the Rain) began with prayers, holy water and sacrifices to the gods. And the ceremony did bring the villagers luck. In three days the Chacs arrived with the rain. Every one in the village was very happy because the drought ended. In September it was time for harvest and Father and Tigre went to their milpa and saw that their corn grew ripe.

Summary (9-12) Chapters

First of all it as time for planting but the rain would not fall. Many days after that it still did not rain and the plants planted by the villagers did not start growing. Then, the Hetz Mel which is a special ceremony which is done to every newborn baby for it to adapt easier to the Mayan life, was done to Chan Tata who is Tigre's younger brother. Chan Tata seemed to understand the ceremony very well because of his constant seriouseness. After that, Tigre got his very own gun which he wanted very much as a gift from his grandfather for all his hard work. The drought still continiued and the village could not get the rain to fall in order to harvest. The villagers started making holy ceremonies for the gods of the rain called the Chacs to arrive but the rain did not yet come.

Summary (7-11) Chapters

Tigre has to prepare the milpa for burning it before the March rain season starts. His uncle is meant to help him but he did not arrive so Tigre had to do it alone. He did it really well and felt proud of himself. When the Fiesta came he participated in the bull figth and did not win but everyone was still pround of him.

Summary (3-6) Chapters

When Tigre's father broke his leg bone Tigre goes searching for a bonestter. Then Tigre finds out that his fathers leg won't heal before havrvest so Tigre has to do all the work. He becomes much stronger and catches up his schoolwork. After that something starts killing the chikens in the coop and after 2 nights Tigre finds a vampire bat in the coop.

"The Corn Grows Ripe" by Dorothy Rhoads Sumarry (Chapters 1-3)

Hello! In class we just read the book called "The Corn Grows Ripe" by Dorothy Rhoads. This book is about a Mayan boy named Tigre who lived in a village. In the beginning of the book Tigre was very lazy and did not do very much work but throught the book he strated to do a lot of work and understand how important it is to do all his responsibilities. Now I will write the summary of the book and put some pictures In this post I will include the summary of the book from Chapters 1-3.

Tigre lived with the Maya tribe. He was only 12 but he was expected to do hard jobs which were for men. Tigre did want to help his father but he overslept many times. His great Grandmother always scoleded him for being lazy. Then when Tigre did not go to work with his father, a tree fell on his father and he broke his lag. Now, Tigre has to go find a doctor to help his father and do all the work for his father.
